Friendship in Islam
Maxims of Prophet Muhammad (s. a. w.)
Edited by: Engineer Afsaneh Cooper
1. The best companion near God is the one who is better for his companion and the best neighbour is the one who is better for his neighbour.
2. Policy is one half of livelihood, civility is one half of wisdom, worry is half of old age and less family members is a half of wealth.
3. The best friends are four bodies, the best vanguards are four hundred and the best army is four thousand.
4. The basis of wisdom after belief is friendship with people and beneficence with good and bad. Nobody is needless from consultation. Righteous people of this
world are righteous people of that world and wicked people of this world are wicked people of that world.
5. There is no benefit in companionship of a person who does not know you his equal.
6. Except a misled, no one likes a misled.
7. No dwelling – place is tight for two friends.
8. Keep in the middle in friendship, as a friend might become your enemy one day and in enmity do not be extravagant in your way as the enemy might turn to
a friend one day.
9. When someone likes his acquainted let him know, as this behaviour is the cause of friendship and durability of cordiality and friendship.
10. When you became friendship with someone, do not dispute or compete with him, do not seek superiority over him and do not ask anything about him from
anybody, as it is possible you meet one of his enemies, who speaks wrong about him, which causes dis-union between you both.
11. Reveal ‘’hello’’ to keep safe.
12. God likes continuation of the old friendship, therefore continue the old friendship.
13. Friendship is hereditary and enmity is hereditary.
14. Good behaviour makes the friendship solid.
15. They inherit friendship and they inherit enmity.
16. Everyone who associate with accusers deserves more than all people to be accused.
17. Avoid a bad friend as people know you by him.
18. A man believes in the religion of his friend. Look with whom you are becoming friend.
19. A man follows the path of his friend
20. A man is in the queue of his friends and sees the result of his deeds.
21. Three things purifies the friendship love; that you say hello to him, when you see him open a place for him in a meeting and call him with his best names.
22. The love you feel towards something would make you blind and deaf. Everyone is equal to the things he loves.
23. Everyone who loves something, mentions that a lot.
24. One of the good deeds is to be friend with your father’s friend.
